When driving, there are certain things you can do to improve your fuel effeciency and reduce the wear and tear on your car. The results are lower motoring costs and safer drivers. A win win.
- Look ahead and read the road.
- If you see a potential hazard, lift of the accelerator and hold your foot over your break just incase you need to use it.
- Look out for bends and lift of the accelerator well before you get to the bend and make sure you are in the appropiate gear.
- Do not tailgate. This increases the number of times you need to break which means wasted fuel and break pad wear. Follow at least with a 2 second gap and keep your gap constant not with your break but with feathering the accelerator.
- Ensure your tires and levels are correct.
- Remove all uneeded wieght from the car ie electronical gadgets from glove box.
- Ensure you service your car every year.
- Drive in a lower gear. For example, I drive a Mondeo Diesel and I aim for 2000revs as this is the most effecient. A rule of thumb is third gear for 30, 4th for 40 and 5th for anything there above.
All of these tips are ones I follow every time I drive and from my Mondeo 2.0l TDCI 06 reg, I have recieved up to 75mpg compared to the average of 45-50mpg of other owners. This also does not mean I drive anoyingly slow and I reach destinations in the same time as others.
